In each of columns 4 and 8 there are only two possibilities for a 9. The columns share one of those possibilities in row 1. Both columns can't have their 9 in row 1, so one of the other possibilities must be a 9. Any cells that see both of those other possibilities can't be a 9. Those cells that see both are r8c9, r7c5 and r7c6.

 Hope that's clear.

				| Got it! And I even understand it - miracle! Now, if only I can spot a skyscraper all by myself....
 Thanks so much!

				| Kathy,
I forgot to mention...in your latest grid, there are more eliminations that can be made from that 35-25-23 XY-Wing, specifically the 2s in column 8 of box 6.

Please forgive me as I am new to the forums and am still learning some various solving methods but I am stuck here. I asked for a hint and was given the 1 in r5c8 but I can't see how that is derived from what I have solved so far. Anyone interested in helping me get a little more sophisticated in this sudoku world?

 Thanks, Dan

Dan, welcome to the forum. In row 9 the 256 triple gets rid of the 2 in r9c9. Now box 9's 2 has to be in column 8, so other 2s in that column get eliminated. Now the 47 pair in box 6 forces the 1 in r5c8.

Take a look at this site and see if it's what you're looking for.

				| Thanks Marty, that makes perfect sense. I need to get my head around some of these patterns so I see them without help.
