Play this puzzle online at the Daily Sudoku site

It is basically a "Very Hard". I did happen to find a one-step solution.

So did I, but I had two steps before I saw the one-step.

+----------------+----------------+----------------+ | I like this puzzle because there are a couple of VH possibilities that open up others.

X-wing on <1>.

X-wing on <8>. Correction: Should be on <7>.

I can't find my original coloring. But my one-step elimination is <1> in R5C1. There is a half M-wing <18> that does it.

X-wing on <8>

Keith |

I could not locate the X-wing on <8>, but I did spot a Kraken x-wing <8> that deletes <8> from r5c9 as a one-step solution.

It should be

X-wing on <7>. You can find it in R49.

Ted: If the X-Wing you found was [c68] for <8>, then you found a finned X-Wing.

 	  | Code: | 	 		   +-----------------------------------+

 |  .  .  8  |  .  8  .  |  .  .  8  |

 |  .  8  .  |  .  . *8  |  . *8  .  |

 |  .  .  8  |  .  .  .  |  .  .  8  |

 |-----------+-----------+-----------|

 |  .  8  8  |  .  8  .  |  .  .  .  |

 |  .  .  .  |  .  8 *8  |  . *8 -8  |  finned X-Wing because

 |  .  8  8  |  .  .  .  |  . #8  .  |  fin cell in same box as elimination

 |-----------+-----------+-----------|

 |  .  .  .  |  .  .  .  |  8  .  .  |

 |  8  .  .  |  .  .  .  |  .  .  .  |

 |  .  .  .  |  8  .  .  |  .  .  .  |

 +-----------------------------------+

 |

If the extra candidate cell doesn't share a row/column/box with an elimination cell, then it's a Kraken fin cell and the result is a Kraken fish.

BTW: Nice catch! |

Thanks Danny for pointing out the finned X-wing. I had noticed it but assumed that Keith was referring to a regular, every day x-wing.

In any case, the Kraken x-wing <8> is in r13c39 with the external fin in r1c5. If the x-wing is true, then eliminations are in r46c3 and r5c9. If the external fin is true then in box <5>, r45c5 <>8 and r5c6=8. Thus r5c89 <>8 and r6c8=8 which leads to r6c23<>8.

Overall, the Kraken eliminates <8> in r5c9 (which is the same elimination as the finned x-wing)and r6c3 (which is unnecessary to solve the puzzle).

Why use a simple finned x-wing when a harder Kraken x-wing will do the same job?
